The Glee summer tour just wrapped up and it looks like the hit show will continue to be a formidable contender in the future. Glee began in 2009 to critical acclaim showcasing a group of misfit kids in their high school’s Glee Club, “New Directions,” competing in choir competitions. No one could have predicted that this show, featuring covers of popular songs, would become the phenomenon it is today. It’s on Fox, which has used its fame to sell Glee merchandise, everything from bobble heads to t-shirts to their music is on sale.
The Glee Club is led by Spanish teacher Will Schuster (Matthew Morrison), who is constantly battling his nemesis, cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lane). Will’s ex wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig) also continues to play a part on the show, interfering with his life and manipulating him any chance she gets. The Glee Club is mostly led (although not by choice) by Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), an overly ambitious teen whose desires for stardom often irritate her fellow Club members.
Berry is in love with Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), who has an on again/off again relationship with the popular, cheerleader Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron). The diversity of its characters and the issues they face makes Glee stand out amongst its competitors. The main cast of students includes wheel chair bound Artie Adams (Kevin McHale) and gay teen Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer). Episodes often dive into the students’ personal backgrounds in a way that really makes them relatable to their audience.
The franchise was expanded to the “Glee Live! In Concert!” tour. The tour opened in 2010, starting in North America and then expanding to the United Kingdom and Ireland Music is mostly from the series and has been receiving a good response from fans and critics. It even ranked ninth on the Billboard Hot Tours List for 2010.
The summer of 2011 brought special guest appearances by Gwyneth Paltrow and Jane Lynch. Paltrow appeared in the second series as sexy, substitute teacher, Holly Holliday. Their performances were recorded for an upcoming feature film, “Glee! Live! 3D!” which opens in theaters for two weeks beginning August 12. Glee season 2 newcomers, Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink), Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) performed with the cast during the concert tour and will be appearing in the film. A press release about the film hints at behind the scenes footage being included as well.
